Job summary Expected Shortlisting Date: 03/01/2025 Planned Interview Date: 09/01/2025 The Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Department have 2 exciting vacancies within the team of Medical Equipment Attendants that operate and run the Equipment Pool service.
This posts are based across the St Jamess/LGI Hospital sites.
The Equipment Pool provide a range of services directly to clinical areas across the hospital sites; a library of commonly used items of medical equipment, a medical gas cylinder delivery and management service, provision of pharmaceutical and consumable items for the resuscitation trolleys and support for the Trust-wide domiciliary nebuliser service.
Main duties of the job Working within a team of 16 staff, covering shifts that ensure a 24 hour service is maintained across 7 days.
You will be jointly responsible for the equipment management and servicing activities associated with the Equipment Pool.
You will be responsible for the safe storage, cleaning, checking and distribution of a range of expensive medical equipment; you will also be responsible for the safe management of medical gas cylinders, including ordering, stores management and delivery to the end users.
The department operates within a quality management system registered to ISO9001:2015.
About us The Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Service is responsible for the management of an extensive range of medical equipment and related services throughout the Trust, including patient monitoring and life support equipment, surgical systems, anaesthetic equipment, infusion devices and haemodialysis systems.
The clinical engineering service in the Trust is delivered by teams of technical officers.
The incumbent is a member of the Equipment Pool that provides an equipment library service, a medical gas management service, a domiciliary nebuliser service to support patients in the community and direct support for resuscitation services.
The post holder will be expected to work closely and effectively with other technical staff and the clinical staff in the specialist clinical areas for which the Clinical Engineering teams are responsible, to ensure delivery of a high quality service.
The post may be based at either St Jamess or LGI.

Job description Job responsibilities Working in a team of 16 staff, covering shifts that ensure a 24 hour service is maintained at all times, jointly responsible for the equipment management and servicing activities associated with the Equipment Pool service; responsible for the safe storage and handling of expensive medical equipment (values range between £1000 to £6000 each).
Responsible for the distribution and collection, cleaning and checking of medical equipment associated with the Equipment Pool service and management of medical cylinder gases.
To maintain the inventory of equipment and service histories using the departmental computerised job management system.
To support the Trust-wide domiciliary nebuliser service by providing preventative and corrective maintenance for nebuliser compressors, operating the home loans recording system and providing direct support to patients with loan equipment.
To support clinical areas by providing stocks of pharmaceutical and other clinical equipment for use in resuscitation.
To ensure a continuous service by monitoring stocks of equipment and spare parts and arranging for appropriate orders to be placed.
To be aware of the requirement for timeliness, safety, reliability and quality in all work carried out to ensure a high standard is maintained.
To collaborate fully with other teams in Clinical Engineering.
Responsible for carrying out minor repairs and checks on items of equipment as agreed with the service manager.
Proposes changes to operational policies that impact on own area.
Collaborates in writing technical procedures for own area.
Some responsibilities include: Responsible for supplying essential medical equipment and supplies, including drug packs, directly to clinical staff for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Responsible for supply and support of medical equipment and associated consumables direct to patients for their use at home, including responsibility for advising patients and carers about technical aspects of the equipment provided.
This may be several times per day.
Responsible for the safe testing and repair of medical equipment (for which the post holder has been trained on and signed off competent) for use in clinical diagnosis or treatment of patients.
Responsible for the preparation, packing and supply of specialist disposable medical equipment associated with supporting resuscitation services.
Responsible for maintaining both paper and computerised databases of work carried out including entering and maintaining patient data relating to home loan equipment.
Takes responsibility for maintaining stock levels of consumable items associated with the Equipment Pool services.
Uses own judgement to determine stock levels of medical gas cylinders and place appropriate orders based on delivery lead times.
Work is carried out within departmental procedures and quality manual documents.
Travel to other hospitals and health centres as necessary for the execution of work.

Persuade and negotiate with equipment users, suppliers and other teams to ensure that equipment and supplies are available and service priorities are met.
Daily work includes constant interaction directly with clinical staff and patients and repair of some items of medical equipment.
Staff are expected to deal compassionately with patients and their carers, both on the telephone and face-to-face when they contact us regarding loan equipment that may have malfunctioned, be due for servicing, or no longer be required.
Ability to concentrate on outstanding tasks whilst responding to many unpredictable interruptions from incoming calls, deliveries and members of staff and public.
Uses computer database information to assist in locating suitable loan equipment and to check its service history.
Ability to work flexibly and to cope with large and unpredictable workload.
Participates in the relevant training and development of new staff within Clinical Engineering.
Supports the technical service teams as necessary to meet customer needs.

Qualifications Essential ONC or equivalent qualification in an engineering subject and/ or equivalent experience in a hospital environment.
