Locum Consultant Diagnostic Radiologist

London, United Kingdom Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Full time

Applications are invited for a locum consultant diagnostic radiologist with a sub-speciality interest in urological imaging. This post has arisen for maternity cover. It offers an excellent opportunity to join an established team of diagnostic Radiologists.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is a tertiary referral centre for urology in both benign and malignant disease. This is a 1.0 WTE consultant post. The successful candidate will have sub-speciality level experience in urological imaging and will be expected to contribute to the delivery of a combination of urological and general radiology.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is at the forefront of urological imaging and research. We were the first site in West London to set up the RAPID prostate same-day diagnostic pathway that saw a reduction in time to treatment from 40+ days to 10 days. The success of our pathway led to the roll-out of this service across London.

The applicants must hold a CCT in Clinical Radiology (or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialty Register, or be within 6 months of being granted a CCT. Candidates with appropriate accreditation in radiology who wish to work only part-time or on a sessional basis are encouraged to apply, as are applicants interested in job-sharing.

In addition to subspecialist programmed activities, the successful candidates will be expected to contribute specific sessions to the general work of the department, including duty “hot desk” reporting, general CT, MRI, US and plain radiographs. Part of this will take the form of an extended day performing an acute cross-sectional reporting session.

Rapid access and the safe and efficient reporting of inpatient and emergency workload are key priorities, and the post holder will be expected to contribute to the general work of the department, including plain film and CT reporting, which is delivered by a large consultant team across 7 days. This includes a daytime duty rota, scheduled but infrequent and flexible sessions at weekends, and also extended weekdays.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a contribution to training as well as to work with the divisional team to help manage the service effectively. There is a strong focus on training, and our radiology training scheme is highly regarded, with approximately 60 trainees currently in post, many in sub-specialty training. The appointee will also be expected to play an active role in trainee supervision and close liaison with clinical staff. A research background would be welcomed, and there will be opportunities to develop research activity within the department.

At Imperial College Healthcare, you can achieve extraordinary things with extraordinary people, working with leading clinicians pushing boundaries in patient care. Become part of a vibrant team living our values - expert, kind, collaborative, and aspirational. You’ll get an experience like no other and will fast forward your career. Benefits include career development, flexible working, and a wellbeing staff recognition scheme. Make use of optional benefits including Cycle to work, car lease schemes, season ticket loan, or membership options for onsite leisure facilities.

The statutory requirement to be fully Covid-19 vaccinated as a condition of employment from April 2022 is subject to legislative review. At Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, we strongly encourage and support vaccination uptake as this remains the best line of defense against COVID-19. The successful applicant may have contact with patients and service users, and as part of our pre-employment checks and risk assessments, we will ask all candidates to confirm whether or not they have been fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption.

As part of our continued response to Covid-19, we are still conducting the majority of our interviews virtually. We are committed to equal opportunities and improving the working lives of our staff and will consider applications to work flexibly, part-time, or job share. Please talk to us at the interview.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and divisional director, on behalf of the Medical Director; this is not designed to be exhaustive. One evening list per week will be included and will be either a general ultrasound list or an acute scan reporting and checking list. One of the PAs will be on a Friday afternoon for all appointees. There will also be a weekly in-hours acute imaging reporting session supporting the registrar body.

In line with Trust policy, the job plan has 9.0 direct clinical care (DCC) PAs (clinically related activity) and 1.0 SPA for audit, clinical governance, appraisal, CPD, and revalidation. Such activity will be agreed in the job planning process and will have agreed and measurable outcomes.

In addition, the post holder may be expected to contribute to subspecialty MDTs. These are weekly or monthly. Details to be decided following discussion, and taking into account the post holder’s preferences and skills, and the requirements of the service. Please note MDT preparation time and MDT attendance is to be kept under 20% of total DCC time.
