We are thrilled to be supporting a local charity who offer vocational training and employability skills training to young people in recruiting a Construction Instructor/ Tutor in Norwich.
The charity opened their vocational learning hub in 2012 and provide an alternative learning environment for young people with few or no qualifications. They provide opportunities within construction, mechanics, catering, hospitality, health & social care and hair & beauty, alongside functional skills and GCSE’s in English and Maths.
Depending on experience, the role changes slightly. Instructors will be given the opportunity to undergo qualifications to enable them to become tutors. All applicants must have previous experience working within the construction industry and ideally teaching/ training qualifications, however these will be offered for candidates looking to become a Tutor.
The Construction Instructor/ Tutor will deliver high quality teaching and learning over a range of courses and levels whilst ensuring the health, safety, safeguarding and well-being of learners, staff and visitors to the centre. The successful individual will support all students in achieving their potential by taking a proactive, enthusiastic and flexible approach.
Instructor Responsibilities
- To assist the Tutor in the development of resources, teaching materials, schemes of work and lesson plans for all lessons as per your timetable
- To support the planning for new courses and activities at the Centre and externally
- The planning and preparing of all learning activities with guidance from the Tutor
- Assist the Tutor with the delivery of teaching and learning
- To support the students to find creative ways to achieve learning across the levels for individuals (especially those with additional needs)
- To support students in community projects to promote engagement and work experience
- Maintaining group registers, tracking progress and providing feedback to both students, centre staff and student schools
- Keep all behaviour logs and student records updated
- To positively engage with all students including those that display challenging behaviours, enabling students to be treated as individuals in a person-centred manner
- To supervise a work area, with support, in the absence of a Tutor
- Deal, in conjunction with the Welfare department, with any student conflict or incidents in line with both the individual’s plans and company policies, ensuring all incidents are recorded properly
- To work as part of the team to manage student’s behaviour on site, in accordance with the company’s ethos, code of conduct, behaviours and rewards policy and the overriding corporate strategy
- Maintaining tools, equipment and resources for the purposes of teaching and learning
- Maintain standards required under the Health & Safety at Work Act and all relevant health and safety regulations
- To support other staff where needed across core activities
- Contribute, where possible, with the development of the vocational curriculum, and subsequent design of delivery areas and methods
- Contribute to and participate in the whole organisations performance, leading by example and working as part of a team
- To support the management with the registration and management of vocational qualifications.
Tutor Responsibilities
- To develop resources, teaching materials, schemes of work and lesson plans for all lessons as per your timetable

- The delivery of teaching and learning for multi skills construction to include painting and decorating, wet-trades, bricklaying, tiling and carpentry
- To work alongside the Internal Quality Assurance Officer to deliver the Internal Quality Assurance process in line with external requirements
- Attend meetings with External examiners as required
- To support the individual progression route for each student
- To support the students to find creative ways to achieve learning across the levels for individuals (especially those with additional needs)
- To support students in community projects to promote engagement and work experience
- Produce individual learning plans (ILP) which will support any behaviour plans
- The evaluation of teaching and learning and assessment of students
