About the Role

The University of Bristol is seeking a highly skilled Project Archivist to join our team for an 18-month part-time appointment (50%). This role is attached to an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project, 'Colonial Reels: Histories and Afterlives of Colonial Film Collections', led by Dr Jacqueline Maingard, Associate Professor in Film.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators to identify films and film footage for possible digitisation.
  • Collaborate with archivists in partner archives, particularly the British Empire and Commonwealth Collection and the Royal Anthropological Institute, to select films for digitisation.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the archives, their collections, and archival protocols.
  • Work alongside the project's Digitisation Officer to scope films and catalogue selections.
  • Complete catalogues and records, and participate in some travel (mainly London and possibly Cambridge).
Requirements
  • Meet the qualifications required and have further training, education, or experience in film archiving or related fields.
  • Have knowledge of film technologies, preservation, and formats, as well as an interest in film history and British colonial history.
  • Be familiar with current debates on decolonisation and access to archives, especially film archives.
