Role Overview
Randstad Student Support is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Academic Support Specialist to work with autistic students studying at universities and colleges in Manchester.
This is a hybrid role that requires the ability to travel to local universities or colleges and offer both in-person and online sessions flexibly to meet student preferences.
As an Academic Support Specialist, you will be a trusted advisor for students, assisting them throughout the full academic year. You will help students reflect on their experiences in study, introduce strategies to overcome barriers, and support them in achieving their academic goals.
The key responsibilities of this role include:
- Supporting students in understanding academic requirements
- Developing time management and organisational skills
- Breaking down tasks to meet deadlines
- Achieving a balance between study and daily living
- Managing anxiety, stress, or low mood
- Preparing for new experiences
- Building confidence and strengths to become an independent learner
Requirements for the Role
To be successful in this role, you must have the correct qualifications and training. All students you will be supporting are funded by the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA), so you must adhere to the qualification framework set out by the DfE.
Candidates must be qualified to undergraduate degree level (level 6 as minimum) and have taken extensive training in adult autism.
The extensive training may include:
- 6 National Autistic Society Modules (non-medical helper package)
OR
- The Optimum Training Course: Autism and ADHD in Higher Education: Recognising and addressing the barriers through Non-Medical Helper (NMH) Mentoring and Study Skills Strategies.

The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience of working with autistic clients
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Punctuality and reliability
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to manage a caseload of students
