Home-Based Childcare Professional
As a home-based childcare professional with the Isle of Wight Council, you will have the opportunity to provide high-quality care and education to children in your own home. This role is on a self-employed basis, allowing you to be your own boss and work at times that suit you.
Contract Type: Casual
Hours: Part-time or full-time per week
Please note that this is a self-employed role, not with IW Council.
A childminder is a childcare professional who looks after one or more children for more than two hours a day in their own home for financial reward. They offer a flexible, quality service for parents and their children.
The demand for childcare services is increasing, and we are looking to recruit more home-based childcare professionals across the Island who can meet the needs of children and families. As a registered childminder, you would be self-employed and need to comply with Ofsted registration requirements and complete background checks.
You may be eligible for a Government grant of £600 towards setting up as a childminder if you register with Ofsted. Local authority support and training are offered to prospective childminders throughout the registration process.
Support and Training
The Early Years Advisory team provides support and training to prospective childminders, equipping them with the right skills to be successful childminders offering a quality home-from-home setting for children and families.
What You Need to Do to Become a Registered Childminder
To become a registered childminder, you must have an understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and hold a suitable Paediatric First Aid certificate. The local authority offers all prospective and registered early years providers and childminders the opportunity to subscribe to the 'Early Years Training Programme.'
Safeguarding Training
Safeguarding - as the lead practitioner, you must attend a child protection course that enables you to identify, understand, and respond appropriately to signs of possible abuse and neglect. Food hygiene courses are available to Isle of Wight childminder practitioners as an E-learning package through the 'Training Subscription scheme.'
Self-Employed Childminders
Childminders are self-employed and HMRC provides information for prospective childminders to help them register and maintain basic records of their self-employment. We estimate the salary for this role to be around £25,000 - £30,000 per annum, depending on experience and location.
Other Childcare Opportunities
Apart from childminding, Early Years offers a wide range of employment opportunities working with children from 0 to 5 years old, with many leading to nationally recognised professional qualifications.
