Job Title: Science Laboratory Assistant

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Science Laboratory Assistant to join our team at GSL Education. As a key member of our Science Department, you will play a vital role in supporting our teachers and students by preparing materials, resources, and equipment for science lessons.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Preparing materials, resources, and equipment for science lessons:

    • Conduct risk assessments to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Set up apparatus and equipment for demonstrations and practical lessons.
    • Ensure timely availability of apparatus, worksheets, books, and other aids.
    • Replenish and store apparatus and chemicals safely.
    • Prepare chemicals and solutions as required.
    • Repair damaged equipment and construct new apparatus.
    • Purchase sundries and dispose of waste according to safety procedures.

  2. Supporting teachers in the Science Department:

    • Assist with equipment trials and provide safety advice.
    • Organize workload to avoid impact on lessons.
    • Communicate with other technicians to resolve equipment clashes.
    • Liaise with teachers to minimize disruption caused by equipment clashes.

  3. Maintaining Science laboratories, preparation rooms, and equipment:

    • Advise on stock replacement.
    • Assist with checking deliveries and storage.
    • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of laboratories and preparation rooms.
    • Clean and maintain equipment in good working order.
    • Care for animals, insects, and plants.
    • Conduct safety checks on equipment.

Requirements:

  • Hold a relevant qualification, such as NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
  • Be competent in using Microsoft Office Applications.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Hold a relevant laboratory technician qualification, such as NVQ Laboratory Technician or equivalent SLC qualification.
  • Have previous experience in a similar setting, such as a preparation room.

Note: Previous experience as a science technician is not essential, but familiarity with working in a preparation room or similar environment would be advantageous.
