Job Purpose

To contribute to the preservation of digital heritage by developing and maintaining digital preservation services at the Digital Preservation Coalition. The successful candidate will provide expert professional advice on digital preservation and ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of digital archives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Digital Preservation Policies: Oversee, develop and maintain born digital collection management policies and procedures (accession, appraisal, description, and preservation) in line with strategic objectives and professional and technical standards.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Advise and liaise with teams across Information Services to develop interoperability between digital preservation systems and other University systems, such as ASC collection management systems, research management systems, and electronic document management systems.
  • Work with Archives Colleagues: Work collaboratively and co-operatively with Archives & Special Collections colleagues and colleagues across the University, to ensure the processing of born digital collections in line with ASC standards and internal procedures.
  • Develop Services for Users: Use specialist knowledge and expertise to develop services for users of born digital collections to ensure the achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Foster Digital Preservation: Plan the ongoing development of the digital preservation service, including technology watch, risk assessment, and testing of new tools and preservation actions.
  • Assess and Advocate: Assess and advocate for appropriate long-term preservation of the University's born digital records.
  • Promote Digital Preservation: Work with the Business Archives Surveying Officer to promote the digital preservation of business collections, particularly those selected for retention as part of the Scottish Business Archive.
  • Develop Knowledge and Expertise: Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of digital preservation issues through involvement in appropriate networks, and share this knowledge across Archives & Special Collections, Information Services and the University.
  • Support ASC's Activities: Undertake prioritised projects to support ASC's activities towards Information Services strategic plan.
