The Independent is a pioneering online news publisher that has been breaking new ground since its establishment in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party political affiliations or proprietorial influence.

In 2016, The Independent underwent a transformative shift by moving away from print and embracing digital publishing, ensuring the sustainability of our values and journalism for the future.

We have an international editorial team based primarily in London and New York.

The Role

The Independent is seeking skilled optimisation editors to join a dynamic new project, further expanding one of the world's fastest-growing news brands while collaborating closely with a small team of digital publishing experts across the globe.

The ideal candidates will possess a strong background in news and a thorough understanding of digital publishing, including SEO, social media, and editing.

They must be able to work independently to optimise content and reach a large audience, crafting compelling copy and headlines, planning evergreen content for major events, and prioritising tasks efficiently.

Suitable candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the news industry and the future of journalism, particularly the application of AI.

Experience in a similar role at an equivalent title is essential, and these are middleweight to senior roles that require regular dialogue with the Head of Growth and other senior colleagues.

You will be expected to manage multiple priorities calmly and methodically, and applicants must have the right to work in the UK. The roles are hybrid or remote but require periodic training sessions at the London HQ.
