Our Finance and Property Services team plays a critical role in delivering essential services to the public in West Lothian. As part of this team, the Financial Management Unit (FMU) is a high-performing unit that provides financial management and planning support to council services.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Accounting Support Specialist, providing a comprehensive range of financial management and planning support and advice to council services. You will work closely with senior officers, budget holders, and elected members to provide financial guidance and support.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing financial and management accounting support to council services
  • Developing financial strategies and options for council services
  • Providing financial advice and guidance to senior officers, budget holders, and elected members

You will be expected to have a sound level of accounting expertise and the ability to communicate effectively with finance colleagues and a wide range of staff throughout the council and in external organizations. The role will also involve opportunities to contribute to cross-cutting initiatives within the Financial Management Unit and across the council.

We are committed to supporting flexible working arrangements to help our employees achieve a better work-life balance. This role will be based in the Education service support team and will involve working in a dynamic team environment.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a HNC in Accounting or a related subject, membership of the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) or a part-qualified accountancy qualification. You will also need to have a knowledge of local government finance, although experience of working in a finance capacity in the public sector is not essential.
