West Sussex County Council is seeking Transportation Support Assistants to join our School Transport team, based across the county.
We are offering a competitive salary of £13.45 per hour, equivalent to £27,859.20 per annum, for a permanent, term-time only contract with variable hours ranging from 0 to 30 hours per week.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe transport of vulnerable adults and school children with special needs, providing a safe, secure, and happy environment while in transit between destinations.
A key aspect of this role is working collaboratively with drivers and other passenger assistants to ensure the smooth running of journeys and the wellbeing of passengers.
In order to excel in this position, you will require:
- Excellent communication skills, enabling effective interaction with adults and children with special needs, their carers, family members, and teachers;
- High levels of patience and sensitivity, allowing you to deal calmly and with care for the wellbeing of individuals with medical or behavioural needs;
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills;
- Able to understand and communicate in basic non-verbal signals, such as an adult unable to speak pointing to something they want;
- A basic understanding of Makaton to facilitate communication with passengers with learning difficulties;
Prior experience working with or caring for children or adults, including voluntary work, paid employment, or family commitments, would be advantageous. Knowledge of how to operate and secure items like booster seats, wheelchairs, and similar devices is also desirable.
