Research Assistant in Wave Energy Converter Control

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Assistant to join our team at Heriot-Watt University. The successful candidate will work on developing and testing control algorithms for wave energy converters in a software environment.
About the RoleThe Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the creation and testing of usable controllers for wave energy converters, working with project partners at Edinburgh University and the University of Strathclyde to engage external participants, and helping to undertake control engineering testing.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and test control algorithms for wave energy converters in software and hardware environments.
- Collaborate with project partners to engage external participants and stakeholders.
- Conduct control engineering testing to ensure developed controllers work well at each stage of the development process.
- Work with the HAPiWEC software engineer to develop and document software for easy controller development.
- Use version control systems to ensure control algorithms and software are developed in a manner that minimizes risk and maximizes updateability.
- Support the preparation and editing of scientific and software engineering journal papers.
The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree or higher in a relevant topic of Engineering and/or wave energy, excellent interpersonal skills, and experience working in the marine renewable energy sector, particularly wave energy. A PhD in a related topic or equivalent R&D experience is desirable.
About Our TeamThe HAPiWEC project is an EPSRC-funded research project investigating novel methods for designing and testing controllers for Wave Energy Converters. The project aims to develop and demonstrate software and hardware methods that facilitate vastly improved ease of use compared to typical methodologies for wave tank testing of control systems.
The Research team is based at three Scottish universities, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh University, and the University of Strathclyde. A collaborative and collegiate approach is taken to project tasks.
