The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior HTS R&D Engineer to play a pivotal role in helping rapidly de-risk the re-mountable joints of the STEP toroidal TF coils and building global relationships to enable the testing of re-mountable joints to reduce overall risk.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage up to 5+ engineers in a highly focused agile technology development program.
  • Development of safety cases prior to conducting experiments
  • Development of relationships with global collaborators

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate will have a bachelors with a relevant technical degree with a minimum of 5+ years of work experience in the superconducting magnets industry. Or a PhD with 3+ years of experience in the superconducting magnets industry.
  • 3-5+ years of scoping out tests, performing sizing calculations (electromagnetic and circuit calculations) and simulations (ideally using COMSOL AC/DC or ANSYS Multiphysics) and performing tests on superconductors at cryogenic temperature utilising cryostats, DAQ and required instrumentation (voltage taps, temperature sensors, strain gauges) and LABVIEW.
  • Experience working with cryogens such as Liquid Nitrogen, Liquid Helium and Gaseous Helium.
  • Experience in testing mechanical properties of superconductors, insulators, and solders.
  • Experience working with high field magnets, preferably HTS.
  • Experience building small test coils, preferably HTS.
  • Experience in preparing and characterizing REBCO using optical and electron microscopy tools.
  • Experienced in DoE (Design of Experiments) and statistical analysis.
