Job Title: Data Scientist - Science and Natural Perils

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to join our Science and Natural Perils team. As a Data Scientist, you will be responsible for managing research projects, developing advanced analytics, and collaborating with senior leadership to develop effective methodologies and tools for modeling the consequences of natural catastrophes on our business.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Manage research projects, both internal and with external collaborators, focused on leveraging data science tools in catastrophe risk management, portfolio analytics, and the science of natural catastrophes.
  2. Deliver advanced analytics, tools, models, and insights to enable risk-based oversight and drive continuous improvement of our business.
  3. Collaborate with senior leadership and other subject matter experts to develop effective methodologies and tools for modeling the consequences of natural catastrophes on our business.
  4. Develop innovative methods to evaluate the performance of existing catastrophe models and enable better forward-looking assessments.
  5. Serve as a data-science subject matter expert, leading initiatives to enhance data quality, insight, and alignment.
  6. Manage and automate key processes and source relevant datasets for data analytics.
  7. Develop and cultivate strategic relationships with other internal technical experts engaged in advanced analytics.
  8. Communicate findings and recommendations to key stakeholders clearly and concisely via both oral presentations and written reports.
  9. Build relationships with key thinkers and practitioners in the academic/research community to bring the latest data science innovation into our modelling practices.
  10. Represent data and information visually through graphical or interactive means such as charts, graphs, maps, or dashboards.
Requirements:
  1. Master's degree or PhD in a numerical subject with robust analytical and quantitative skills.
  2. Ability to translate complex technical information into clear and concise language for various audiences.
  3. Ability to identify and process raw data, trends, analysis, and assessments in order to aggregate disparate information, leveraging both analytic and visualization tools.
  4. An interest in any field of science related to natural disasters.
  5. Excellent time management and communication skills to prioritize effectively.
  6. Experience in statistical and probabilistic/data modeling.
  7. Ability to build a network with internal and external stakeholders.
  8. A keen eye for detail and a problem-solving mindset with a focus on process improvement.
  9. Excellent programming skills in Python, R, SQL, and knowledge of some common machine learning libraries.
  10. Some hands-on experience in data science and machine learning.
  11. Experience with structured and unstructured datasets.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
  1. Some understanding of insurance analytics methods.
  2. A willingness to undertake projects in fields outside of your area of direct expertise.
  3. Experience in managing research projects and excellent multi-tasking skills.
  4. Some experience building production data solutions in (re)insurance.
  5. Some catastrophe modelling experience in (re)insurance industry experience.
  6. Proficiency in data visualization tools.
  7. Experience in cloud computing, and cloud-based services.
