Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic team in the Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion sections.

The laboratory provides a wide range of investigations to support patients with complex haematological conditions. As a key member of our team, you will be trained to perform technical and scientific tasks in the Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion sections. Our department is UKAS accredited and offers opportunities for professional development through attendance at internal and external courses/presentations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • You will participate in out-of-hours shifts after completion of training, ensuring a 24/7 service for our patients.
  • To maintain high standards of technical excellence in laboratory techniques, adhering to standard operating procedures.
  • To ensure timely reporting of results, identifying any deviations from TATs and escalating to senior staff as necessary.
  • Familiarity with assays and procedures conducted in the department, including indications, principles, procedures, interpretation, limitations, and troubleshooting.
  • To authorise and report investigation results, interpret findings to assist diagnosis, and provide clinically relevant comments in line with laboratory policy.
  • To advise clinical staff on appropriateness of investigations and request further tests when necessary.
  • To understand and work within the framework of our Quality Management System (QMS).
  • To perform internal quality control and investigate any deviations.
  • To maintain accurate records of stock levels, reagents, and consumables, ordering supplies as required.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary of approximately £31,000 - £38,000 per annum, depending on experience.
