Cranleigh STEM, Sustainability & SHEQ Recruitment is working with a British-owned paint manufacturing business based in Manchester who are experiencing positive growth in their formulation team. We are now recruiting for a Chemical Research Specialist to join its team on a permanent basis.

The successful candidate will be required to carry out work in the areas of Research and Development, improvement, testing and troubleshooting, maintenance and evaluation of products.

R&D Chemist Responsibilities

  • To plan a pilot plant and scale up of products from laboratory trials through to the handover into the production facility.
  • To develop new formulations and produce samples.
  • To assist in the routine operation at the R&D Laboratory.
  • To analyse and evaluate raw materials and competitor products.
  • Investigate and formulate improvement of products and manufacturing processes and assist with their implementation.
  • Investigate and formulate solutions to problems in production, laboratory and the field, make recommendations to the Technical Manager, and liaise with other staff in remedying problems.
  • To develop an understanding of research, produce reports (verbal and written) to the Technical Director, and to communicate the results of research.
  • To become familiar with and actively support all provisions of the Quality System appropriate to the responsibility of this position.
  • Colour matching and Quality Control of colour collateral would be an advantage.

R&D Chemist Requirements

Experience in Surface Coatings preferably decorative paints.

A degree or higher science qualification (HNC, A levels, apprenticeship).

Proven problem solving experience in the coatings industry.

An understanding on colour physics would be highly beneficial.

Excellent communication skills.

Ability to handle projects independently.
