Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

Job Opportunity: We are seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Environmental Fluid Mechanics research group at the University of Oxford.

The successful candidate will lead the development of integrated whole system design models of tidal stream turbines for renewable power generation as part of the EPSRC-funded CoTide programme. This project brings together world-leading centres at the Universities of Oxford, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, and Sheffield to develop holistic integrated models covering all aspects of tidal stream turbine design.

This role involves collaborating with the entire programme team and industry partners to develop whole system engineering tools, modelling complex interactions between system hydrodynamics, structural mechanics, fatigue, and system reliability. You will explore how design and control of system operation can balance design and performance objectives, using optimisation and control co-design to understand, test sensitivity to, and optimise around key design drivers and objectives.

To be successful in this role, you should possess a relevant PhD (or be near completion) in Engineering or a related discipline. A strong background and relevant experience in the development of integrated engineering models are essential, as well as a relevant background in either fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, fluid-structure interaction, or systems modelling. Excellent communication skills are also required.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Model and software development and integration.
  2. Collaboration with the programme team and industry partners.
  3. Modelling complex interactions between system hydrodynamics, structural mechanics, fatigue, and system reliability.
  4. Exploring how design and control of system operation can balance design and performance objectives.
  5. Using optimisation and control co-design to understand, test sensitivity to, and optimise around key design drivers and objectives.

Estimated Salary: £38,693 - £42,026 per annum
