Job Title: Compliance and Risk Lead

We are seeking a highly skilled Compliance and Risk Lead to join our Environmental Health and Safety Team at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing a robust radiation protection and low-level radioactive waste management system for a new research and development cell. This will involve assessing potential radiation risks, advising on design features and engineering controls, and making recommendations on methods and equipment for radiation protection.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Contribute to the design and creation of the new cell, developing a health and safety strategy and policies to ensure safe operation, maintenance, and disposal.
  2. Assess radiation risks and advise on design features, plant and engineering controls, and shielding, equipment, and waste disposal activities.
  3. Make recommendations on radiation protection methods and equipment for plant processes and equipment.
  4. Advise on the selection, purchasing, and maintenance of radiation protection and detection equipment.
  5. Contribute to risk assessment, analysis, documentation, and actions necessary to comply with safety requirements and criteria.
  6. Lead radiation risk assessments, plant hazard identification studies, and Safety Cases.
  7. Define management systems and procedures for operational radiation protection.
  8. Establish criteria for radiological surveys and airborne monitoring.
  9. Liaise with the approved dosimetry provider and set up a system for internal and external dosimetry and personal radiation records.
Person Specification:

We are looking for a candidate with:

  1. Chartered Membership of the Society for Radiological Protection.
  2. Current Radiation Protection Adviser status approved by a relevant awarding body.
  3. Scientific or Engineering Degree or related discipline equivalent or the ability to demonstrate performance and experience at an equivalent professional level.
  4. Knowledge and/or experience relevant to operational radiation protection, managing radiological material and waste, assessing radiological/conventional health, safety, and environmental risks, and identifying effective controls.
  5. The ability to assimilate, analyse, and provide judgements on new and complex technical issues, clearly and concisely.
  6. Knowledge and/or experience of generating nuclear plant Safety Cases.
  7. Strong communication, decision-making, and influencing skills to audiences ranging from senior managers, project delivery teams, and operational staff.
  8. UK National, holding or capable of achieving further security clearance.
