We are seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team at the Imperial & Global Forum. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof Maria Fusaro and Dr Guido Rossi on the European Research Council funded project Average-Transaction Costs and Risk Management during the First Globalization (Sixteenth-Eighteenth Centuries).
The project focuses on the historical analysis of institutions and their impact on economic development through the investigation of a legal instrument – general average (GA) – which underpins maritime trade by redistributing damages' costs across all interested parties.
The PDRA will work on Malta, one of the main centres of maritime traffic in the Mediterranean, where the archives of some local notaries contain a wealth of sea protests related to General Average, which will shed light on the development of GA at the intersection between common law and ius commune.
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be fluent in both English and Italian, as these are the languages in which the primary evidence is written.
- Freedom to pursue your intellectual interests and work creatively across disciplines to produce internationally exciting research;
- Support teams that understand the University wide research and teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly;
- An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development;
- A beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Devon.
