Job Title: Lead Data Steward

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Data Steward to join our team at UK Research and Innovation. As a key member of our data modelling team, you will be responsible for driving day-to-day direction, mentoring junior colleagues, and contributing to the development of new standards for annotating scientific datasets.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Drive day-to-day direction in the data modelling team, mentoring and supporting junior colleagues as the team expands.
  • Work with stakeholders to survey metadata and data model requirements for diverse scientific data modalities.
  • Contribute to shaping new standards for annotating scientific datasets.
  • Produce high-quality documentation and structured data dictionaries for collaborative open-source pipelines.
  • Build skills in SQL, RDF, knowledge engineering, and other technical domains as required.
  • Maintain resources and code using version control and Git.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and the scientific community using various platforms.
  • Learn the FAIR principles and ensure our data platform product is FAIR-compliant.
  • Work systematically to harmonise metadata and controlled vocabulary across data types.
  • Flag and escalate issues in data to project stakeholders according to validation metrics.
Requirements:
  • A strong life sciences or computational degree, or relevant work experience.
  • Experience working with metadata, controlled vocabularies, and structured data in the life sciences.
  • Experience and knowledge of life sciences big data, including transcriptomics, behavioural time-series, and genomics.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting junior colleagues from a position of increased responsibility.
  • Experience working effectively within a technical team.
  • Demonstration of consistency and independence when working on long-term projects.

  • Capable of working under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective professional working relationships.
  • Willing to learn new technical skills as project goals change.
