Aquatics Technician Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Aquatics Technician to join our team at the Francis Crick Institute. As an Aquatics Technician, you will be responsible for the daily husbandry of freshwater fish, including zebrafish, Xenopus laevis, and livebearers. Your primary focus will be on maintaining the health and well-being of these animals, ensuring their care and welfare are of the highest standard.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience in an aquarium, zoo, or laboratory setting, with a strong understanding of freshwater fish husbandry. You will be required to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a team to achieve our research goals. Your excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment will be essential in this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the health and well-being of freshwater fish, including zebrafish, Xenopus laevis, and livebearers
  • Perform daily husbandry tasks, including water changes, feeding, and monitoring animal health
  • Conduct animal welfare checks and maintain accurate records
  • Assist in the maintenance of life support systems and aquarium equipment
  • Provide excellent customer service to scientists and researchers

Requirements:

  • GCSE level or equivalent education
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (including Maths and/or Science)
  • Experience in an animal care setting, preferably in an aquarium, zoo, or laboratory
  • Strong understanding of freshwater fish husbandry
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
