The successful candidate will be clinically competent in all areas of advanced practice and equipment use relating to the current management of childhood diabetes, including insulin injection and pump therapy, blood glucose and sensor monitoring.
They will also participate in a regular review of the responsibilities of the multidisciplinary team as a service provider, examining the structure and processes against all criteria identified in the Best Practice Tariff, National Paediatric Diabetes Audit and Peer review.
The role will involve working cross-site within East Kent and participating pro-rata in the Out of Hours telephone on-call service for children, young people and their families, ensuring they have access to specialist diabetes advice.
The successful candidate will work mainly within the hospital setting but the role may entail time within the home and the community, enhancing established links with schools and other community groups and forging new ones.

Requirements- General paediatric nursing experience
- Significant experience as paediatric diabetes nurse specialist
- Completed/undertaking Masters level education encompassing a specialist diabetes component
- Can evidence good time keeping and attendance
- Can demonstrate commitment to working within a specialist service
- Able to give examples of specialist projects and innovation
- Demonstrates expertise in supporting children on intensive therapy and continuous glucose monitoring
- Demonstrates ability to teach others
- Demonstrates innovation and contribution to ongoing service development
- Experience as preceptor/mentor
- Demonstrates understanding of national strategy/policy and how this relates to the service
- Evidence/awareness of Trust values
- Can evidence clinical competence in the use of diabetes related technology e.g. pumps and continuous glucose monitoring
- Published articles/posters
- Practical experience of audit/research
- Able to work collaboratively and autonomously
- Self motivated and enthusiastic
- Ability to empower and inspire
- Demonstrable understanding of clinical governance and its application to practice
