Job Summary:

A Highway Maintenance Operative role has become available in BEAR Scotland's SE Operations team. This position is responsible for carrying out various road maintenance operations, including the erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers, hot material patching, and drainage works.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Erect and remove temporary signs and barriers.
  • Perform hot material patching by hand.
  • Carry out drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, and scrub cutting.
  • Install and fix temporary/permanent road furniture.
  • Operate power tools, small plant, and machinery.
  • Drive vehicles with simple attachments, such as tractors.
  • Prepare written returns, including fault report details.
  • Provide support for specialist roadworkers.
  • Ensure public, colleague, and self-safety.
  • Participate in standby and winter maintenance rota.
  • Perform winter maintenance duties, including gritter body and plough fitting, operating winter maintenance vehicles, and footway tractors.

Requirements:

  • Ability to undertake training and achieve competence in job aspects.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety rules and procedures.
  • Physical fitness for working in arduous conditions.
  • Experience with small plant operation.
  • Holding plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety tickets an advantage.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Experience working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
  • Teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
