Highway Maintenance Operative – Chryston

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join BEAR Scotland's SE Operations team as a Highway Maintenance Operative.

The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to the Scottish Borders.

The Highway Maintenance Operative, reporting into the Operations Manager, should be an experienced roadworker with the necessary skills to carry out various road maintenance operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Erecting and removing temporary signs and barriers.
  • Hot material patching by hand.
  • Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting.
  • Installation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furniture.
  • Operating power tools, small plant, and machinery.
  • Driving vehicles, including those with simple attachments.
  • Preparing written returns, including fault report details.
  • Providing support for specialist roadworkers.
  • Ensuring the health and safety of the public, colleagues, and oneself.
  • Participating in standby and winter maintenance rota.

Requirements include:

  • Undertaking training and achieving competence in aspects of the job.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety rules and procedures.
  • Physical fitness for working in sometimes arduous conditions.
  • Experience of using small plant.
  • Holding tickets for plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety (an advantage).
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines and under pressure.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility to working practices.
  • Ability to cope with change.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
