We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Radiotherapy Physics Expert to join our team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for a senior physicist to lead the radiotherapy physics service, providing expert advice and strategic leadership in the development of highly complex radiotherapy services.


About the Role



  • Lead and Manage Radiotherapy Physics Service: Provide expert advice and guidance on radiotherapy topics, including specification and purchase of equipment, and ensure that supervision and training of Clinical Scientists and Practitioners in Radiotherapy Physics is supported.
  • Scientific Leadership: Act as consultant head of service for Radiotherapy Physics, providing expert advice and strategic leadership on highly complex radiotherapy service developments and the optimisation of radiotherapy techniques.
  • Service Planning: Lead on service planning and shaping the group for the future, including a process for continuous improvement, and work closely with senior staff in Oncology and other departments.
  • Quality and Performance: Meet all activity, quality and performance targets, including for service level agreements, training, commercial, clinical trials and other contracts as appropriate.

Required Skills and Qualifications



  • Theoretical and Practical Knowledge: Highly advanced theoretical and practical proven knowledge of Radiotherapy Physics to act as Medical Physics Expert under IR(ME)R within the field of Radiotherapy.
  • Radiation Protection: Specialist proven knowledge of all areas of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research.
  • Equipment Management: Broad and developed proven knowledge of clinical procedures and practices in radiotherapy, and a high level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from exposure to non-ionising and ionising radiation.
  • Leadership and Management: Proven management skills, including effective team and people management experience, and a well-developed planning and organisational skills.

  • Salary: The salary for this role is approximately £80,000-£100,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • Location: The role will be based at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, PL6 8DH.
