About the Role

This is a senior technical expert position in Research and Network Strategy at BT Group, which plays a crucial role in shaping the company's future technology direction in the Wireless Transmission domain. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality research that helps BT achieve its business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Domain expert responsible for delivering world-class research within the Network Infrastructure research programme.
  • Accountable for generating proposals and managing novel research projects that deliver business value and contribute to the company's goals.
  • Responsible for intellectual property creation and helping others across the team develop skills in that area.
  • Manages collaborative research projects or other research collaborations as appropriate.
  • Accountable for appropriate standards contribution, industry influencing, and direction setting within the area of specialism for the team.
  • Responsible for authoring thought leadership technical papers and capturing intellectual property.
  • Supervision of professionals, graduates, and post-graduate student placements and secondments.
Requirements
  • Technical domain expert: Considerable (10+ years) experience successfully pioneering new and emerging network systems technologies, with breadth and depth of knowledge across a range of technologies in the Wireless Transmission Research technical domain.
  • Research reputation: World-class standing and recognition in the Wireless Transmission Research technical domain, with experience in authoring peer-reviewed papers, generating patents, or creating experience of keynote speaking and being a panelist in high-profile conferences and events.
  • Horizon scanning: Detects early signs of potentially important developments through a systematic examination of potential threats and opportunities, with emphasis on new technology and network strategy.
  • Story-telling with data: Strong skills in building the case for change, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicating this to business audiences.
  • Business acumen: Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organizational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy.
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Technical domain expert: A thought leader on present and future wireless technologies, with a strong appreciation of relevant system architecture at BT Group.
  • Experimental fluency in wireless transmission.
  • Evidence of delivery of impact on technical decisions both internally and externally.
  • Proven ability to conduct techno-economic assessments of new concepts and their impact on BT network.
  • Able to file new IPR naturally as it emerges in the candidate's research.
  • Able to autonomously publish and take a leading role at major conferences, with an emerging external reputation.
  • Able to autonomously lead large-scale research projects, including internal and external collaborations.
