About the Role

The National Physical Laboratory is a leading organization in setting standards for measurement. As a Research Scientist/Technician, you will play a vital role in carrying out technical activities to resolve problems and achieve positive outcomes.

This is a team-based role, where you will work collaboratively with others to identify commercial opportunities and deepen your subject matter knowledge. You will be expected to be proactive, spot opportunities, and share your knowledge with the team.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need good science A Levels or equivalent vocational qualifications, and preferably higher educational qualifications or laboratory experience.

For the Scientist level, a physics degree or equivalent qualifications or directly relevant laboratory experience is required. Strong practical, numerical, and team working skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will be part of a team responsible for the maintenance and development of national standards for temperature measurement.
  • You will use these facilities to deliver customer calibration services at the highest quality.
  • You will combine calibration work with laboratory support duties such as managing an inventory of equipment.
  • NPL has leading capabilities to calibrate thermometers between approximately -196 °C and 3000 °C, as well as expertise and novel techniques for solving real-world temperature and humidity measurement problems.
