Job Description

Job Title: Learning Support Assistant

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join our team at Queen Alexandra Charity. The successful candidate will provide individualized support to students with special educational needs, promoting independence and academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learning Support:
    • Recognize and record student progress against targets
    • Understand curriculum areas and broad course objectives
    • Participate in team meetings
    • Adapt learning styles to meet individual student needs
    • Implement disability theory and practical strategies to engage students
    • Liaise with specialists to develop strategies for student support
    • Support communication through the development of communication methods
    • Support tutors to create a suitable classroom environment
    • Support tutors in the creation and preparation of differentiated resources
  • Personal Tutoring:
    • Undertake regular tutorials with assigned students
    • Agree on targets and review progress regularly
    • Attend and participate in annual and transition reviews
  • Social and Emotional Support:
    • Recognize and adapt support to meet social and emotional needs
    • Contribute to the development and updating of Positive Support Plans and Risk Assessments
    • De-escalate challenging behavior using positive behavior support plans
    • Undertake preventative work to reduce challenging behavior
  • Break and Lunch Support:
    • Support students during unstructured time to ensure safety and ratios
    • Support students to engage with peers or activities
    • Lead and support students during club or directed study activities
  • Personal Care:
    • Support students with hygiene needs, including feeding, toileting, and changing clothes
    • Ensure personal care needs are met in line with care plans
    • Support students to access campus and activities
  • General:
    • Use technology to access student information
    • Communicate with external professionals, families, and careers
    • Participate in personal education and training
    • Engage in peer mentoring and support
    • Support students to access community activities

  • Ability to work with students with special educational needs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities
  • Knowledge of disability theory and practical strategies
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
