Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Support Specialist to join our team in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate will provide technical support to teaching and research activities, working closely with academic staff and students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to teaching and research activities, including the maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment
  • Assist with the organization of equipment for practical classes, fieldwork activities, and associated stores
  • Ensure the safe and efficient use of laboratory equipment and materials
  • Develop and maintain laboratory procedures and protocols
  • Collaborate with academic staff to design and deliver laboratory-based teaching and research projects
  • Provide training and support to students and staff on laboratory procedures and equipment
  • Contribute to the development of laboratory policies and procedures

Requirements:

  • Formal qualification in a relevant subject area, such as an NVQ/BTEC level 3 or 4 or equivalent
  • Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment
  • Familiarity with microscopes, reagents, chemicals, basic laboratory instrumentation, and Health and Safety
  • Ability to engage with students and colleagues in a courteous and constructive manner
  • Competent IT skills in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Full current driving license and willingness to travel to different locations

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience of working in a university or research environment
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and protocols
  • Experience of working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds
