The Charity Commission is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Director of Legal and Accountancy Services to join our team. Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage our legal and accountancy teams, providing strategic direction and guidance to ensure that we deliver high-quality services to our stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement effective risk-based strategies to ensure that our regulatory work is secure and compliant with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Provide expert legal advice to our Board, Chair, and CEO, as well as to our Directorates and Board committees.
  • Collaborate with our senior management team to develop and deliver our 5-year plan, ensuring that we have the necessary resources and capabilities to achieve our strategic objectives.
  • Lead by example, promoting a positive culture and morale within our legal and accountancy teams, and across the Commission as a whole.
  • Develop and deliver strategic and business plans for our legal and accountancy services, ensuring that they align with our Commission's overall goals and objectives.
  • Ensure that our litigation is proactively and effectively managed, and that we conduct litigation personally where necessary.
  • Provide high-level legal advice to our stakeholders, including the Board, Chair, and CEO, as well as to our Directorates and Board committees.
  • Ensure that our legal and accountancy services operate at optimum value for money levels, and that we are accountable for accurate forecasts and remain within budgetary limits.
  • Collaborate with our client teams, including investigations and inquiries, intelligence and tasking, registration and customer services, and regulatory compliance, to ensure that our services are aligned with their needs and priorities.
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with the Charity Tribunal and the external legal community, ensuring that we learn from their experiences and apply this knowledge to improve our services.

Requirements

  • Hold a Solicitor or Barrister qualification, or equivalent, and be qualified to practice in England and Wales or an equivalent jurisdiction.
  • Have a strong understanding of charity law and practice, as well as the social and economic environment in which charities operate.
  • Have expert professional legal competence, enabling successful risk-based intervention in complex cases.
  • Have strong representative skills in formal legal proceedings, and be able to present complex legal arguments to senior staff, Board members, and stakeholders.
  • Have experience of influencing legal policy and practice at the highest levels, and of creating positive and innovative team cultures that drive high standards of performance and productivity.
  • Have experience of working in a senior management team, and of leading by example to promote a positive culture and morale within the team.
  • Have strong leadership and communication skills, and be able to motivate and inspire others to achieve their best.
  • Have a strong understanding of the Charity Commission's values and goals, and be able to contribute to the development of our strategic plans and objectives.

  • A competitive salary of £95,000.
  • A contributory pension scheme, with employer contributions of £27,521.
  • A flexible hybrid working policy, with a combination of office attendance and homeworking days.

  • A minimum of 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing by one day per year up to a maximum of 30 days per year.
