About the Role

The Church of England is seeking a highly skilled Speechwriter to support the Archbishop of Canterbury in his ministry. As a key member of the Communications team at Lambeth Palace, you will be responsible for drafting high-quality speeches, articles, and statements for the Archbishop, working closely with him and other stakeholders to ensure that the content is accurate, engaging, and effective.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research and draft speeches, articles, and statements for the Archbishop, ensuring that the content is well-researched, accurate, and engaging.
  • Work closely with the Archbishop and other stakeholders to agree on messaging, format, style, and tone of speeches.
  • Manage the process of consulting other stakeholders, including chairing meetings and circulating drafts for feedback.
  • Format speeches for delivery, checking for house style, layout, flow, and repetition.
  • Ensure correct filing and necessary follow-up post-delivery, including CAD and publication on the Archbishop's website.
  • Draft other content for the Archbishop, including op-eds for national newspapers, statements, and social media posts.
  • Participate fully in the day-to-day work of the Communications team, including assisting with advice to colleagues, media monitoring, preparing briefings and file notes, responding to correspondence, and organizing and attending meetings.
Requirements
  • Strong theological literacy, either through study or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of drafting spiritual content and reflections.
  • Experience of drafting speeches, articles, statements, and other spoken or published content.
  • Knowledge of the work and ministry of the Archbishop of Canterbury, his role in national life, and in a global context.
  • Proven experience of presenting complex information in clear and compelling ways.
  • Knowledge of, and interest in, UK national debates and foreign affairs.
