Senior Lead Science Technician

Job Summary:

GSL Education is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Lead Science Technician to join our team at a secondary school in Greenwich. As a key member of the science department, you will be responsible for managing the technical team, ensuring smooth operations, and providing technical support to staff and students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Health and Safety: Coordinate health and safety procedures in line with CLEAPPS and COSHH regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for all.
  • Team Management: Manage and coordinate the daily workload of the technical team, setting priorities and deadlines to meet departmental needs.
  • Resource Management: Standardise chemical and apparatus management across the department, ensuring efficient use of resources and minimizing waste.
  • Disposal and Maintenance: Organise the safe disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Support and Training: Support the Director of Science with departmental health and safety meetings, conduct in-department audits and inspections, and train new staff members on health and safety policies.
  • Departmental Support: Assist the Director of Science in maintaining the departmental budget, lead the design, development, and maintenance of specialist resources and projects, and set annual appraisal targets and oversee performance management for the technical staff.

General Technical Duties:

  • Resource Preparation: Prepare, issue, and maintain resources for use in classrooms and laboratories, ensuring timely delivery and minimal disruption to teaching and learning.
  • Support and Assistance: Assist in setting up demonstrations and practical assessments, provide first aid primarily within the science department and across the school when needed, and accompany students on science-related school trips.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and repair laboratory equipment, keeping an accurate log of damages and ensuring optimal performance.
  • Stock Management: Ensure stock levels of chemicals and materials are maintained and replenished as required, minimizing delays and disruptions to teaching and learning.

Requirements:

  • Experience: Experience managing a team within a science department, with a proven track record of effective team management and technical expertise.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of CLEAPPS, COSHH, and relevant health and safety procedures, with a strong understanding of technical and scientific principles.
  • Skills: Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to provide technical support and guidance to staff and students.
  • Qualifications: First aid qualification or willingness to undergo training, with a commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
