About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical and Electrical Engineer to join our team at the Canal & River Trust. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our waterway infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work safely and ensure the safety of others, contributing to a safe working environment in all activities.
  • Manage volunteers in the delivery of works, ensuring they are completed safely and to the correct quality, while maintaining volunteer satisfaction and delivery to programme.
  • Support the delivery of a programme of M&E maintenance and repair works, by staff and assisted by contractors as required, to ensure the waterway infrastructure is well maintained, while maximising customer satisfaction.
  • Provide mechanical and electrical support to assist in the resolution of mechanical and electrical situations as they arise, and be part of the On Call Rota providing assistance and support for assets out of hours/weekend working.
  • Working under supervision, produce recommendations to minor problems, undertaking minor design changes where appropriate.
  • Provide and support the delivery of a first level of response for reactive works, ensuring the safety of customers and the availability of the network.
  • Working to a planned timetable, inspecting, monitoring, and reporting on the condition of M&E assets.
  • Provide customer service through the operation of the Trust's assets in a safe and timely manner, and responding to customer enquiries to maximise customer satisfaction.

About You

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer/Technician/Operative with experience and knowledge of mechanical engineering, with previous experience in the water industry, factory production lines, or manufacturing processes where fault finding wiring systems of 400/230/24 volts occurs frequently.

If you have any experience of fault finding and then fixing a variety of electrical and/or mechanical assets of varying types and sizes, you may well be right for us. We welcome Technicians with valuable experience, for example, if you have worked with water plants, pumps, sewage works, hydraulics, production plants, traffic lights, packaging machines, lifts and escalators, automatic gate systems, or heating control systems.

Preferred Qualifications and Attainments
  • C&G 2391/2 or equivalent for testing and inspection of electrical installation.
  • C&G BS7671 18th edition wiring regs advantageous.
  • NVQ3/C&G in an Electrical Discipline or Apprentice trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer.
  • Short courses in specific mechanical or electrical courses advantageous.
Work Experience
  • Minimum of 3+ years' experience as an Electrical Engineer/Technician/Operative is essential, and experience of mechanical engineering or a related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience as a multi-skilled engineer is highly desirable/advantageous.
  • Proven experience with Hydraulic systems and fault finding would be advantageous.
  • Proven experience with Electrical control panel fault finding is essential.
  • Apprentice trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer highly desirable.
Skills
  • Knowledge of modern computerised planned maintenance systems.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Full driving licence.
Safety
  • Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards, report incidents, accidents, and near misses. Assess the risks and adjust work methods where appropriate. Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials, etc.) is appropriate for the task. Consider your own and others' behaviour.
