Job Opportunity at the International Institute for Strategic Studies

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to join our China Programme in London. The successful candidate will contribute to our original research on Chinese security and defence issues, working closely with our Senior Fellow and China Programme Head.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth research on Chinese security and defence, focusing on traditional and non-traditional security activities and Chinese foreign policy.
  • Produce high-quality research outputs, including publications, blogs, data visualisation projects, and contributions to longer studies.
  • Take a lead role in China research and consultancy projects requiring data or analysis, engaging in original research, producing research papers, and presenting findings to government, academia, media, and industry.
  • Support fundraising activities, including developing ideas and concept notes for research projects, writing fundraising proposals, and assisting in identifying sources of financial support for the programme.
Requirements
  • Master's or other postgraduate degree in Chinese studies, security and defence studies, or a related field with a particular geographic focus on China.
  • Proven work experience in a think tank, academia, or government, with excellent command of spoken and written English and proficiency in Mandarin.
  • Strong computer literacy with excellent Microsoft skills and ability to collaborate well with a wide range of people both in person and remotely across time-zones.
