Role Profile

Our Automation & Digitalisation teams deliver projects in various industries, including Nuclear, Food & Beverage, Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, Energy/Renewables, Metals, and Utilities.

We use a wide array of technology, including Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, AVEVA, and many more. Our solutions include PLC, HMI, SCADA, MES, Batch, Functional Safety, OT Cyber Security, and Industry 4.0.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and quality leadership to a team of 25 engineers based at Chesterfield.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Automation, Head of Projects, Project Managers, Technical Managers, and Engineering teams.
  • Be responsible for the successful delivery of technical aspects of projects delivered by the Automation team.
  • Line manage Engineers, including appraisals, PDPs, one-to-ones, development & training planning, SQEP & competence management, recruitment, employee welfare & wellbeing.
  • Provide Technical Assurance and Quality Assurance.
  • Carry out Project Surveillance audits and ensure engineers follow best practice guidelines.
  • Train the team on the quality system and its use, and review and update the quality system periodically.
  • Play an active role in internal and external audits (ISO 27001, ISO 9001, and TickIT plus).
  • Promote and facilitate knowledge sharing, learning from experience, and continuous improvement.
  • Support the Head of Automation, Project Managers, and Engineers in the development and execution of project strategies.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of new technologies and identify training and recruitment requirements to meet technological advances and strategic requirements.
  • Manage OEM partnerships, support Business Development teams, and support Proposals.
  • Responsible for Industry 4.0 solution development and supporting external digitalisation projects.
  • Responsible for managing internal digitalisation projects.
  • Deputise for the Head of Automation as required.
  • Demonstrate Health and Safety and Compliance leadership.

Requirements

  • A minimum 10 years' experience of integrated control system solutions (PLC, SCADA, DCS, MES, Batch, etc.).
  • Experience of delivering engineering projects in a variety of industries.
  • Broad multi-vendor technical knowledge.
  • Experience in Technical Management or equivalent technical lead role.
  • Experience of Line Management and development of engineers.
  • Experience of working with multidiscipline project teams.
  • Experience of providing Health and Safety and Compliance leadership.
  • Experience of industrial protocols.
  • Detailed experience of the full project life cycle from system specification through design, development, testing, and commissioning.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Experience of working within and supporting the continuous improvement of a Quality system.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of ISO 27001, ISO 9001, and TickIT plus standards and their application.
  • Knowledge of Industry standards such as ISA95 (IEC62264), IEC62443, IEC61511, IEC61508, IEC61131, IEC61499.
  • A thorough practical appreciation of control panels, electrical installation, and Instrumentation solutions.
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Industry 4.0 solutions experience.

Education

  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, or relevant discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council (IET or equivalent professional body).
