Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead to join our Cross Boundary Team (CBT) at the Department for Work and Pensions. As a member of our leadership team, you will be accountable for application development and coordinate technical teams to create and maintain products and services for DWP.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the technical leadership of a large team (around 100 resources) from varied disciplines to provide current and future application development services across DWP.
  • Advise senior employees and ministers on development services priorities and provide further information on proposals submitted for approval.
  • Maintain relationships both internally and externally, reconciling on priorities and agreeing on approach, tooling or strategy improvements.
  • Advise on problems arising from specific work programmes or from implementation of proposed changes in Departmental policy and make balanced recommendations.
  • Interpretation and judgements in selecting and analysing a complex set of information, testing options and hypotheses or the co-ordination of views of other internal and external interests to achieve mutually acceptable solutions.
  • Ensure product development alignment with and assists in delivery of wider DWP technical strategy.
  • Work closely with delivery team to ensure alignment to DWP standards and best practice for all product development and support.
Person Specification

As part of the application process, you need to align your experience in line with the following Essential Criteria:

  • Experience of anticipating and exploiting opportunities, suggesting and reviewing new technologies to ensure they are fit for purpose and utilised in the best way possible.
  • Experience of leading a team of engineers, providing experience, advice, and guidance to a wider team.
  • Experience of getting solutions through technical governance, in particular architectural design approval, and understanding how technical governance works within wider governance.
  • Experience of assuring corporate services by understanding key risks and mitigation through assurance mechanisms.
  • Experience of ensuring solutions meet standards of practice and appropriate governance.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from £69,869 to £77,740. The maximum salary for the grade is £77,740, however a Digital Allowance of up to £12,255 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.
