Job Summary

As a Senior Project Engineer at Network Rail, you will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the B&C (Structures) Central Route NW&C for ASPRO, Enhancement Development, and Self-Delivery. This role requires strong leadership and project management skills, as well as technical expertise in engineering disciplines.

About the Role

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will be responsible for:
1. Implementing digital railway systems and procedures to deliver a cost-effective, high-quality, and safe approach to design, construction, commissioning, and other technical activities on relevant projects.
2. Monitoring the competence of all Project Engineers working on projects associated with Digital Railway Programme outputs and providing functional guidance.
3. Applying engineering controls and procedures to all projects and checking whether all design and construction contracts include reference to appropriate Railway Group and Company standards applicable to their discipline.
4. Applying relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all projects and checking whether the environmental aspects of all projects are managed in accordance with Environmental Policy.
5. Monitoring all projects for compliance with Railway Group and Company standards and Digital Railway Programme project control procedures.
6. Advising project and programme management in respect of all construction activities, testing, and commissioning, and site supervision. Monitoring whether the design and construction elements meet the requirements of legislation, including construction design management (CDM) regulations.
7. Assuring whether contractors' design, construction, and specialist personnel are competent.
8. Undertaking reviews of design and construction activities. Arranging audits of contractors to monitor whether safety and quality of design, construction testing, and commissioning and management systems are adequate.
9. Carrying out the duties of designated project engineer (DPE) to fulfil the requirements of Network Rail engineering management standards and procedures.
10. Undertaking accident investigations when remitted to by the relevant designated competent person to identify root causes/corrective actions required and to disseminate learning.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:
• Significant experience in engineering disciplines, ideally with involvement in construction and design projects across multi-discipline areas.
• Technical qualifications to at least HND level or equivalent.
• Membership of a relevant professional institution.
• Experience of major contracting.
• Knowledge of structuring safety cases in support of projects.
• Knowledge of safety management and quality assurance.
• Understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of works.
• Accident investigation experience.

Desirable

It is desirable to have:
• Six Sigma Yellow Belt.
• Chartered status or equivalent in the particular discipline.
• Appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works.
