Research Associate/Fellow in Urban Analytics

Job Purpose

To make a significant contribution to the growing research in Geospatial Data Science, this research associate/fellow will work with Professor Ana Basiri and the team to explore the implications of living in cities designed for the average resident. This role will involve working on newly awarded research projects, including "Missing Data as Useful Data", and collaborating with industry partners such as Ordnance Survey GB, Google, and Microsoft Research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Quantify the implications of living in cities designed for the average resident, with a focus on under-representative groups such as elderlies and people with mobility issues.
  2. Develop a mathematical framework to communicate the concept of living in a city designed for the average resident through visualization methods.
  3. Collaborate with the Geospatial Data Science team and project partners to co-design and develop inclusive and responsible technologies.
  4. Plan and conduct research individually and/or jointly in accordance with project deliverables and research strategy.
  5. Develop and enhance research profile and reputation, including contributing to publications in high-profile journals and gathering indicators of esteem.
  6. Present work at international and national conferences, seminars, and workshops to develop and enhance research profile.
  7. Support and contribute to FAIR principles, including making data and code repositories available and reproducible.
  8. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings, seminars, and workshops.
  9. Lead and contribute to the organisation, supervision, mentoring, and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team.
  10. Lead and contribute to outreach activities, teaching, and supervision as assigned by the Principal Investigator.
  11. Be responsible for safety management related to laboratory and/or experimental techniques, equipment, and processes.
  12. Engage in personal, professional, and career development to enhance specialist and transferable skills.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential:

  • Awarded PhD in a relevant academic/research discipline, with experience of personal development in statistics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative geography, or similar disciplines.
  • Extensive knowledge of quantitative data analysis, (geo-) statistics, urban analytics, and simulation.
  • Extensive experience in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R).

Desirable:

  • Good knowledge and experience of agent-based modelling, Geo-AI, or spatio-temporal data.

Skills:

  • Research creativity and cross-discipline collaborative ability.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including team working and a collegiate approach.
  • Self-motivation, initiative, and independent thought/working.
  • Problem-solving skills, including a flexible and pragmatic approach.

For appointment at Grade 8:

  • Good team leadership skills.

Experience:

  • Sufficient postdoctoral experience or equivalent in a related field.
  • Experience of scientific writing.
  • Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

For appointment at Grade 8:

  • A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences.
  • Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence.
  • Experience in undertaking independent research.

Desirable:

  • Experience with collaborating with or working at international academic environments of the highest national or international quality.
  • Experience with identifying and developing funding applications.
  • Support of less experienced members of the project team.
