Job Summary

The Inpatient Coding Specialist is a key member of the South Shore Health System's Health Information Management department, responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely assignment of codes for all outpatient and inpatient diagnoses and procedures. This critical role requires a high level of expertise in coding principles and a strong understanding of clinical documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Coding and Data Analysis: Utilize established department policies and procedures in conjunction with the current versions of ICD-CM Classification for Hospitals to determine the proper diagnosis, assign co-morbidities and complications, secondary diagnoses, present on admission indicators, HAC (Hospital Acquired Conditions), principal procedure codes, and secondary procedure codes.
  2. Documentation Review and Clarification: Query providers when documentation requires clarification to ensure accurate and complete coding.
  3. Collaboration and Quality Improvement: Proactively work with medical leadership to address concerning documentation trends and contribute to the development of strategies to improve coding accuracy and efficiency.

Requirements:

  • CCS certification is required for this position.
  • At least 6 months of relevant inpatient facility coding experience is necessary.
  • Experience with 3m 360 and Epic systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with anatomical, physiological, and pharmaceutical terms and concepts is essential.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills are necessary to gather and interpret data.
  • Proficient data entry skills, displaying both speed and accuracy, are essential.
  • MS Office suite proficiency is required.

Work Schedule:

The Inpatient Coding Specialist will work a Monday-Friday schedule with flexible start times between 7am-9am and end times between 3:30pm-5:30pm.
