Job Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated Band 8a pharmacist to join our Clinical Trials Management team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful candidate will have an active interest in clinical trials and a good understanding of good clinical practice (GCP).

Main Duties

The main duties of the role include:

  • Providing advice and information on medicines-related aspects of research and innovation activities, including clinical trials, to ensure compliance with national legislation and guidelines.
  • Reviewing and improving current Medicines Management and Pharmacy Services CSU (MMPS) clinical trial set up processes to provide a service that meets the Trust's performance in initiation and delivery targets for NIHR portfolio clinical trials.
  • Providing support and advice to clinical pharmacists in the review of new protocols, liaising with aseptics, investigators, trial sponsors, and Trust R&I regarding medicines management issues raised as part of the review.
  • Checking and approving final versions of IMP (investigational medicinal product) management procedures for each trial and performing the Pharmacy Green Light process for Clinical Trials.
  • Supporting Aseptics Services with the set up and ongoing management of Clinical Trials, providing the senior link between pharmacy clinical trials and aseptics services, coordinating workload, and approving trial-specific worksheets.
  • Assisting the Clinical Trials team in preparing for clinical trial audits and inspections by trial sponsors, pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory agencies.
  • Assisting in the provision of training to pharmacy staff on GCP and regulatory frameworks, guidelines, policies, and procedures relating to clinical trials.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading, delivering, developing, and evaluating highly specialized clinical pharmacy services to a clinical specialty within the Trust.
  • Managing other pharmacists providing specialized clinical pharmacy services within their own clinical specialty, depending on the size of the area.
  • Working directly and regularly with consultants, senior nursing staff, and managers within the clinical specialty.
  • Monitoring and interpreting expenditure on medicines within their own clinical specialty.
  • Providing the Directorate with regular reports to assist in the safe use of medicines, the management of the drug budget, and clinical governance issues.
  • Supervising the development and implementation of treatment protocols and guidelines for the use of drugs within the clinical area.
  • Providing training to pharmacists and other healthcare professionals on aspects of drug use within the clinical area.
  • Providing a service commitment, typically a four-hour session to a specific area within the pharmacy department dispensary, aseptics, or medicines information.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to have:

  • A postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience or qualification.
  • Registrant of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Substantial post-registration experience as a practicing clinical pharmacist.
  • Ability to demonstrate foundation level competencies in all 6 domains of the Advanced to Consultant Level Framework (ACLF).
  • Experience of dealing with highly complex clinical issues, knowledge of good clinical practice, and experience in radiopharmacy.
