Head of Market Risk and Compliance

As we expand our operations in the UK and globally, we're seeking a visionary Market Risk Director to join our Energy Markets team. This key leadership role will cover all of Octopus' current and future international supply businesses.

We have ambitious growth plans and rely on our Risk team to work closely with our international businesses to agree on appropriate trading approaches, ensuring risk is understood and managed as conditions evolve. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver, acting as a facilitator rather than a regulator. At Octopus Energy, we value great people who can adapt quickly to a complex business environment.

You will be directly supported by a small but highly skilled team. Within the wider team, you will collaborate with developers, engineers, and analysts to build and improve tools.

Some international travel will be required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with our supply entities in all countries to understand market conditions and agree on risk approaches
  • Develop and implement Group and country-specific Market Risk Policies, consulting local traders and management
  • Design analysis and visualizations that collate country-specific risk positions into a single, clear Group view, with delivery supported by the engineering team
  • Pull together Group views on weather risk and originate and execute positions to manage this risk
  • Work closely with local trading management to originate appropriate wholesale deals
  • Explore the use of asset and consumer flexibility as risk management tools
  • Generate explanatory materials for senior stakeholders, up to and including the Octopus Energy Group board
  • Scope covers market risk generated by wholesale gas, power, and certificates
Requirements:
  • Strong numerical ability and understanding of risk
  • Energy market experience is beneficial but not essential
  • Basic Python knowledge will be beneficial but not vital
  • The ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects
  • Interpersonal skills to form trusted relationships with business unit management teams and challenge with empathy and understanding
