Job Title: Assistant News Editor

This is a challenging and exciting opportunity to join the ITN team as an Assistant News Editor. As a key member of the Channel 5 News team, you will play a vital role in supporting the News Editors and planning team in the creation of high-quality TV and digital content.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist News Editors and Planning Editor in the development of news content and planning.
  • Answer news desk phones, prioritize information, and liaise with newsgathering staff.
  • Pursue, book, and negotiate with potential guests and contributors.
  • Pass on information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Coordinate the assignment and briefing of newsgathering staff.
  • Be a key liaison point between the news desk and on-the-road teams.
  • Deal with PRs and publicity to secure high-profile guests.
  • Log picture as required.
  • Be aware of copyright and access information, as well as ITN compliance rules.
  • Research, locate, and negotiate the acquisition of stills and video material within budget.
  • SOURCE and secure video and other content from social media for TV and digital output.
  • Field queries and facilitate special commissions.
  • Find and research stories and secure filming opportunities.
  • Ensure liaison with the ITV News and Channel 4 News news desks and ITN Productions to avoid duplications in assignments.
  • Identify and create opportunities for digital content and work with the news desk, planning team, and Digital Editor to deliver them.
  • Understand the importance of fast, accurate, and detailed logging of material and absolute compliance with ITN policy on clip coding.
  • Liaise with the rostering team about the availability of newsgathering staff.
  • Act up to the role of Deputy News Editor on occasion.

  • Flexible worker with a positive approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to deal with high-profile public figures.
  • Genuine interest in, and knowledge of, the 5 News agenda.
  • Understanding of the difference between TV and digital content and output.
  • Knowledge of social media as a newsgathering tool.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a broad range of people.
  • Engagement with new technologies and newsgathering methods.
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual.
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements.
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making.
  • Previous newsroom experience desired.
  • Only candidates with a journalistic background or training will be considered for this position.
