Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist News Editors and Planning Editor in newsgathering and planning activities
  • Answer news desk phones, prioritize information, and liaise with correspondents
  • Pursue, book, and negotiate with guests and contributors
  • Pass on information clearly and concisely
  • Coordinate newsgathering staff assignments and briefings
  • Liaise between news desk and on-the-road teams
  • Deal with PRs and publicity to secure high-profile guests
  • Log pictures as required
  • Be aware of copyright and access information, as well as ITN compliance rules
  • Research, locate, and negotiate stills and video material within budget
  • SOURCE and secure video and other content from social media for TV and digital output
  • Field queries and facilitate special commissions
  • Find and research stories, securing filming opportunities
  • Ensure liaison with ITV News and Channel 4 News news desks and ITN Productions to avoid duplications
  • Identify and create opportunities for digital content, working with the news desk, planning team, and Digital Editor
  • Understand the importance of fast, accurate, and detailed logging of material and absolute compliance with ITN policy on clip coding
  • Liaise with the rostering team about newsgathering staff availability
  • Act up to the role of Deputy News Editor on occasion
Key Requirements:
  • Good communicator
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure

  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills, with attention to detail
  • Flexible worker with a positive approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to deal with high-profile public figures
  • Genuine interest in, and knowledge of, the 5 News agenda
  • Understanding of the difference between TV and digital content and output
  • Knowledge of social media as a newsgathering tool
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a broad range of people
  • Engagement with new technologies and newsgathering methods
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision-making
  • Previous newsroom experience desired
  • Only candidates with a journalistic background or training will be considered for this position
