Principal Research Scientist

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Principal Research Scientist - Power Networks to join our Electromagnetic Technologies Group at NPL.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the development of measurement methods and instrumentation for intelligent monitoring of electricity grids. The UK grid is undergoing significant transformation as it prepares to operate with zero carbon emissions by 2030, introducing new challenges for stable grid operation.
About the RoleYou will be working closely with the team to support activities including:
- Setup and safe operation of laboratory testbeds for electrical measurements related to various power grid phenomena (e.g. harmonics, frequency deviations)
- Development of software for automatic hardware configuration and data analysis
- Development and testing of new measurement methods and instrumentation for power quality and grid stability monitoring
- Preparation and deployment of instrumentation for field measurement campaigns across the UK and Europe
- Collaboration with international research organisations and universities within R&D projects
- Presenting research results in the form of publications, reports, posters, and oral presentations at symposia and international conferences
This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge measurement challenges in electricity networks, collaborating with Senior Scientists to develop innovative solutions.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will have a strong background in electrical engineering and/or physics, with experience in developing measurement methods and instrumentation for power systems. Key responsibilities will include:
- Designing and implementing laboratory testbeds for electrical measurements
- Developing software for automatic hardware configuration and data analysis
- Conducting experiments and collecting data using developed instrumentation
- Analyzing data and presenting results in the form of publications, reports, and presentations
To be considered for this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- Strong background in electrical engineering and/or physics, with experience in developing measurement methods and instrumentation for power systems
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to design and implement laboratory testbeds for electrical measurements
- Programming skills in languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB
NPL offers a competitive salary of £65,000-£85,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits including:
