About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and flexible individual to join our Transmission business as a Trainee Engineer. As a Trainee Engineer, you will have the opportunity to study towards a HNC and Diploma in Higher Education in Energy Engineering, while gaining valuable work-based experience.

Working within our Transmission business, you will be part of a team that owns and operates the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, transporting energy from where it is generated to where it is needed. You will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects, including the development, building, maintenance, and operation of a network for net zero.

As a Trainee Engineer, you will be responsible for balancing your time on placements within Transmission, which may include working on site and in the field, or working alongside experienced SSE engineers and crafts people. You will have opportunities to work towards becoming a Low Voltage Switcher and then work towards High Voltage Switching, which makes the Network safe to work on, maintains Network integrity and resilience while ensuring safe and reliable supply of electricity.

By the time you reach the third year of the programme, you will be given increased responsibility in managing jobs, including technical aspects, safety management, and the supervision of crafts people.

About the Programme

The Transmission Trainee Engineer programme is designed to build the foundation blocks of your career within the Transmission business, providing you with great opportunities to be exposed to engineering excellence across our business while developing your academic, theoretical, and practical skills.

To be successful in this role, you should be flexible in your approach to work, able to work alone or as part of a team, and have a strong understanding of Maths or Physics. You should also be able to work towards a HNC and Diploma in Higher Education in Energy Engineering.
