Job Summary

This position is with the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Corrections, specifically with the Reentry, Programs, and Education Unit. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chesterfield Women's Correctional Center.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support probationers through a continuum of services, in collaboration with state and local partners, to promote public safety and reduce recidivism.
  • Provide Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) services to individuals on state responsible supervision, in accordance with State Opioid Response (SOR) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funding requirements.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community-based organizations and service providers to ensure a comprehensive range of services for probationers.
  • Conduct regular assessments and evaluations to identify the needs of probationers and develop individualized plans to support their recovery and reentry into the community.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated response to probationers' needs and to promote public safety.
Requirements
  • Casework counseling experience.
  • Completed Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist training.
  • Experience reflecting optimism of a probationer's ability to enter recovery and sustain recovery.
  • Experience with PRS documentation, including utilization of recovery language.
  • Demonstrated ability of ongoing personal recovery growth; willingness to share personal experiences as it relates to recovery; excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to engage difficult to reach individuals; ability to identify a probationer's stage of change; demonstration of ethical responsibility, boundaries, and confidentiality as a PRS.
  • Ability to support all pathways in recovery.
Preferred Qualifications
  • VA Certified Peer Recovery Specialist.
  • Experience as a VADOC PRS Vendor.
  • Certified facilitator for Evidence-Based recovery groups.
Working Conditions

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

This is a wage restricted position. Restricted positions are classified positions with at least 10% of its funding from non-continuous or non-recurring funding sources, such as grants, donations, contracts, capital outlay projects or higher education auxiliary enterprise revenues.
