Job Title: Data Engineer - Cloud Infrastructure Specialist
Origin Sciences is a biotechnology company based in the UK, developing innovative medical devices for clinical trials. We collect a biobank of mucus-based biospecimens to support our research and development streams.
Our primary focus is on creating a minimally invasive and accurate diagnostic for Colorectal Cancer (CRC). We aim to reduce NHS waiting times, enable earlier CRC detection, and minimize unnecessary investigations.
The role:
We are seeking a Data Engineer to manage our data infrastructure and integrate data between teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing cloud resources, implementing improvements to enhance usability and security, and automating data collection from laboratory instruments.
Main Responsibilities:
- Manage organisational cloud resources to process large volumes of sequencing data.
- Implement improvements to enhance usability and security of our infrastructure.
- Implement automation to streamline data collection from laboratory instruments.
- Use ETL to centralise organisational data.
- Provide ad hoc engineering support to the laboratory and clinical teams.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent technical degree or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in Python/R or equivalent programming language for data processing.
- Experience configuring and managing cloud infrastructure.
- Understanding of cloud security best practices.
- Familiarity with integrating APIs with existing infrastructure for process automation.
- Experience with containerisation, such as Docker or Singularity.
- Experience with schedulers, such as AWS Batch, GCP Batch or Slurm.
- Git and version control.
- Ability to critically evaluate data-handling practices in a commercial R&D environment.
- Understanding of data management best practices.
Desirable:
- Associate level cloud certification.
- SQL and relational databases.
- Understanding of how to process human genomics data in line with UK GDPR requirements.
