Job Purpose:

Under the direction of the class teacher or Education Authority officer, the Classroom Support Assistant will provide educational support and care to pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The Classroom Support Assistant will assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum, attending to personal needs, and developing an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils.

Additional Special Classroom Support:

The Classroom Support Assistant will undertake at least one of the following duties:

  • Undertake more comprehensive or invasive medical/clinical procedures.
  • Help pupils with specialist communication skills and/or sensory difficulties access the curriculum.
  • Deal with pupils with very challenging behaviour as identified by the Educational Psychology Service as requiring additional provision.

Special Classroom Support:

The Classroom Support Assistant will assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including:

  • Enabling access to the curriculum.
  • Attending to personal needs, including dietary, feeding, toileting, etc.
  • Developing an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils.
  • Assisting with authorised programmes, participating in the evaluation of the support, and encouraging pupil participation.
  • Contributing to the inclusion of the pupil in mainstream classroom under the direction of the class teacher.
  • Assisting with operational difficulties and medical difficulties pertaining to pupil disabilities.
  • Supporting the implementation of behavioural management programmes as directed.
  • Assisting pupils in moving around school and on and off transport.

General Classroom Support:

The Classroom Support Assistant will assist pupils to learn as effectively as possible, both in group situations and on their own, by:

  • Clarifying and explaining instructions.
  • Ensuring pupils are able to use equipment and materials provided.
  • Assisting in motivating and encouraging pupils as required.
  • Assisting in areas requiring reinforcement or development.
  • Promoting the independence of pupils to enhance learning.
  • Helping pupils stay on work set.
  • Meeting physical/medical needs as required while encouraging independence.

Administration:

The Classroom Support Assistant will assist with classroom administration, including:

  • Assisting with classroom administration.
  • Assisting the class teacher and/or other professionals with the implementation of the system for recording pupil progress.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of pupil progress records.
  • Providing regular feedback about pupils to the teacher.
  • Duplicating written materials, assisting with production of charts and displays, recording radio and television programmes, cataloguing and processing books and resources.

Other Duties:

The Classroom Support Assistant will attend relevant in-service training and assist work placement students with practical tasks.
