Job Title: Principal Engineer - Product Safety

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Brough, Filton, Frimley, Portsmouth, Weymouth, or Manchester. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements.

Job Summary: As a Principal Engineer - Product Safety, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of our products during the design process. You will bring a broad understanding of safety analysis techniques and standards, and influence areas of design with other engineers to ensure a holistic solution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attending and reporting to Daily Stand Up Meetings (DSUM)
  • Design activities including requirement elicitation workshops, applying Product Safety Recognised Good Practice, and coordinating and undertaking analysis (Hazard identification, Analysis and Assessment)
  • Risk reduction activities (reducing risk ALARP) and defining suitable design options and analysing options
  • Applying a systems engineering approach to safety products, including working within a centralised modelling tool
  • Technically leading and coordinating a small safety team as required
  • Preparing safety assessments as required to support system design and development
  • Providing Safety SME to product design and gate reviews
  • Governing and assuring parts of the organisation
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of a healthy product Safety Culture within the team and wider business

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with UK Defence Standard and publications such as Defence Standard 00-56, Defence Standard 00-55, DSA-01, DSA-02
  • Good working knowledge of safety analysis techniques such as Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), and System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA)
  • STEM degree with Product Safety experience within a regulated industry
  • Good working knowledge of the requirements of IEC 61508 and/or IEC 61511 for complex Software and Hardware Safety Instrumented Systems

Desirable:

  • Experience of model-based Systems Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status or working toward chartership
  • Experience within the Defence Industry
  • Familiarity with Cyber-Safety concepts
  • Experience of development of complex Systems of Systems (SoS)
  • Knowledge of Safety standards and practices outside of the Defence domain such as Civil Aerospace, Rail, Oil & Gas, or other Process Industries
