Research Opportunity
We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join our Process Dynamics group and contribute to the development of innovative X-ray imaging techniques for sustainable metal manufacturing. The successful candidate will work on designing and conducting real-time in-situ X-ray imaging solidification experiments to investigate the dynamics of crystal formation using laboratory and synchrotron sources. The project involves the analysis of existing X-ray imaging data of aluminium alloys and the development of novel multi-modal imaging methodologies for the investigation of aluminium and steel solidification. The post holder will collaborate closely with other scientists and technicians from the group and project partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and conduct real-time in-situ X-ray imaging solidification experiments
- Analyse existing X-ray imaging data of aluminium alloys
- Develop novel multi-modal imaging methodologies for the investigation of aluminium and steel solidification
- Collaborate with other scientists and technicians from the group and project partners
Requirements
- Experimental materials scientist or process engineer with experience in X-ray imaging of solidification or related analytical approaches
- Doctorate (or near completion) in materials science or a relevant engineering or physical sciences discipline
- Programming skills and experience in computer vision techniques, preferably in Python
Funding and Duration
The post is funded by UKRI - Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant and is fixed-term for up to 2 years.
